Joanne Summerfield, Artist

I'm an artist and photographer based in Herefordshire, near the England–Wales border. Creativity has always been central to my life—I got my first SLR camera at 14 and have been captivated by image-making ever since.

In 2006, I studied photography at the London College of the Arts and began exploring printmaking in my spare time. But it wasn’t until 2018, when I took an evening class in figurative oil painting, that I truly discovered my medium.

Seeking to develop a freer, more expressive style, I joined the Porthmeor Artist Development Programme at the St Ives School of Painting in 2024. Today, my work is primarily focused on landscape, using fluid colour and loose form to connect with and interpret the world around me. I also paint portraiture and have recently re-engaged with my love of this.
